Doctor Dee on Jazz

julian-macdonoughJust saw the list of newly arrived Jazz for the Manieri collection at the Anacortes Library. The first one listed set off a train of thought that I’m sharing this month.

That first listing? Celebrating the Music and Lyrics of Dave and Iola Brubeck by the Dan Brubeck Quartet – a great listen by the way. I began musing about other famous musicians and their children (usually sons, as you will see). So here is a very incomplete listing of those that come to mind as I sit here in the last week of 2015.

Dave Brubeck (piano): Dan, Drums; and Chris, electric bass, bass trombone and piano. A personal aside – I caught all three of the Brubecks, plus Paul Desmond at the Lincoln Center in the late 1970’s – what a night!

Thelonious Monk (piano): T. S. Monk, III, Drums.

John Coltrane(saxophone): Ravi, Saxophone.

Ellis Marsalis (piano): Branford, Saxophone; Wynton, Trumpet; Delpheayo, Trombone; Jason, Drums.

Duke Ellington (piano): Mercer, Trumpet.

Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar): John, Guitar.

John ‘Poppa’ Defrancesco (Hammond B3): Joey, Hammond B3, trumpet.
Nat “King” Cole (piano, vocals): Natalie, vocals – just before sitting down to write this, I learned that Natalie died on New Year’s Eve.

And closer to home, in Bellingham:

Bill MacDonough (piano): Julian, drums.

I sure that some of you reading this can identify many others.
